Accessible performances
Accessible performances are becoming a regular occurrence at the theatre. Many local societies have started to offer these in conjunction with the theatre, and Springers is no exception. We want theatre to be an inclusive, safe space for all, and play our part in removing barriers for the communities we are part of in Chelmsford.
Previously we have worked hard to engage our d/Deaf and hard of hearing community, by offering British Sign Language (BSL) interpreted performances since 2022 and captioned performances since 2023 in partnership with Chelmsford Theatre and Brentwood Theatre.
This November, we are the first local group to offer a sensory adapted performance (SAP) for Chelmsford, and are working closely with the theatre to ensure it is a success. We also have a team in place to specifically deliver this with a wide range of expertise from working with people with special educational needs or disabilities, to how a performance like this works in a theatre.

What is a Sensory Adapted Performance?
A SAP is similar to what you may know as a relaxed performance, but it goes a little further by:
-
Holding a pre show talk to show the audience some of the sounds they may hear, as well as introduction to the characters and their costumes
-
Softening technical effects such as sound and lighting
-
Supporting noise and movement in the auditorium so people can leave should they need to
-
Having the house lights on, but dimmed, throughout and allowing re-entry to seats
-
Only selling at 50% capacity to accommodate movement and choice of seating
-
Providing a visual story in advance for patrons to understand the story and what to expect
